The travel diary

Here are a couple of pages from the original diary, in Polish.  English translation is available here. Also a few pictures taken during the trip.
The Polish goverment periodically relaxed it's emigration rules and after two years of effort to obtain passports for foreign
travel,
Julek Rutkowski packed up his young family and their belongings and the family left Warsaw by train headed for
Genoa. There t
hey boarded a migrant ship, the "SS Roma" and after a 6 week journey arrived in Sydney on the 23rd of
December 1958.

Julek was an avid photographer and he took a movie of the journey to Australia. The movie was digitised in 2003 by his
son Adam.  At the insistence of his mother Irena,  Adam also maintained a travel diary, which h
e  translated in 2008.
The video

The original video was taken in super 8 format, using a Kodak movie camera purchased by Julek in the early 1950's. It was subsequently projected onto a
white screen and filmed by a digital camera. Sound and titles were added and you can
see the result here.
